Can You Quit Using Nicotine Patches Or Gums?
   How Nicotine Patches Work

The nicotine patch, which there are several brands you can choose from, is a nicotine replacement therapy. This means that while wearing the patch you should not smoke cigarettes.

Although a cigarette or two here or there, might not hurt you, it is not recommended at all. The companies suggest that if you do slip up, just pick up where you left off.

The patches are used in a weekly sequence and the nicotine levels decline as you go. They are supposed to slowly wean you off the nicotine so it is less painful. With one brand in particular, there is an 8 week plan if you smoke fewer than 10 cigarettes a day. The 12 week plan is for those that smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day.

Nicotine Patches and gums have been around for sometime now. Do they work? While these products do provide you with the nicotine to curb those cravings, they don't do much for the hand to mouth action you are used to.

Many people have stopped smoking tobacco while using nicotine patches or gum, but as with the cold turkey scenario, some of them didn't make it.  Anytime you are trying to quit smoking completely, no matter which method you use, it is going to be largely up to you.

How To Use Nicotine Gum

As stated above, nicotine allows you to have some physical action, chewing, while you are on the program. You can buy it over the counter in most department or drug stores.

There are some possible side effects chewing nicotine gum like nausea, mouth and throat irritation, indigestion or heartburn and sour stomach.

For about the first 6 weeks, chew one piece about every 2 hours. During weeks 7 -9, chew one piece about every 3-4 hours. Finishing up to the 12th week, you should be chewing only one piece of gum every 6-8 hours or so. It is said that you can chew up to 20 pieces of gum a day, but less if you don't need it. You should not chew more than 20 pieces in 24 hours.

Most of the nicotine in one piece of gum will be extinguished in about 30 minutes. You can get the gum in 2mg or 4 mg strength and in regular tobacco flavor or fruit flavors. The gum will give a tingling sensation when you chew and you should chew it slowly, not exactly like other gums. Only chew one piece at a time.

It is also recommended that you should have finished weaning yourself off of the nicotine gum after 6 months at most. Some people that did stop smoking tobacco with the gum have complained that they are now addicted to nicotine gum.
